Circadian rhythms of some behaviors of the cockroach Periplaneta americana L. (Blattodea, Blattidae) during ocelli shielding

摘要

In cockroaches the main role in the adjustment of circadian rhythms is attributed to the compound eyes; at the same time, morphological data indicate a possible role of ocelli in the modulation of the biological clock. Data obtained in this study reveal the effect of shielding the ocelli with black dye on the speed of the rhythm shift and its amplitude. In addition, it is shown that sexual behavior, locomotor activity, shelter occupation, and sleep-like behavior expressed as freezings, have a pronounced rhythm with a single peak, and resting periods have two pronounced minima at the beginning and at the end of the dark phase. Light intensity during the day phase affects the amplitude of behavioral rhythms in a manner similar to ocelli shielding.

New Data on the Ecology of Larinus scabrirostris Faldermann, 1835 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) in the South of the Russian Far East

摘要

This study provides original data on the association of the weevil Larinus scabrirostris Fald. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) with the Manchurian saw-wort Serratula manshurica Kitag. (Asteraceae) in natural habitats in southern Primorskii Territory (Russian Far East). In the biotopes under study, L. scabrirostris showed selectivity towards S. manshurica over other plants of the family Asteraceae, Carduus acanthoides, Cirsium pendulum, C. setosum, and Saussurea amurensis. Imagines were collected from inflorescences and infructescences of this plant until late August and early September and from inside infructescences, from the early 3rd ten days of August to late September. Larvae pupated in pupal chambers inside S. manshurica from early August and were found until early September. The duration of pupal development was 13 days; complete sclerotization of cuticle occurred approximately 24 h later. The emergence of a new generation of adults from the Manchurian saw-wort was observed from the early 1st third to the late 2nd third of September.

New to the fauna of the Republic of Buryatia species of pyralid moths and clearwing moths (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae, Sesiidae)

摘要

The first findings of the pyralid moths Ephestia kuehniella Zeller, 1879, E. elutella (Hübner, 1796), Cadra figulilella (Gregson, 1871), as well as the clearwing moths Conopia spheciformis (Denis et Schiffermüller, 1775) and Tipulia tipuliformis (Clerck, 1759) in the Republic of Buryatia are reported. Cadra figulilella is reported for the first time from the Asian part of Russia. Moths were attracted to glue-type traps with the synthetic sex pheromone of E. elutella, including (Z, E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate and (Z, E)-9,12-tetradecadienol, as well as with the synthetic sex pheromone of T. tipuliformis, including (E, Z)-2,13-octadecadienyl acetate and (E, Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl acetate.

On the centenary of the birth of Elena Fedorovna Martynova (1925–2003) – biographical notes based on the scientific archive of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences

摘要

Based on the materials of the Scientific Archive of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a study was conducted on the biography of an entomologist Elena Fedorovna Martynova (1925–2003), a prominent specialist in Collembola. Specifically, a period of her postgraduate studies (1949–1952) at the Zoological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences is described in this article. Special attention was paid to the defense of E. F. Martynova’s dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences. Her bibliography is included consisting of over 70 scientific publications.
